Hugh Lloyd-Jones (OH approximately mid 1940s)Born in Cardiff, Wales, Hugh attended Hereford Cathedral School and then studied at Cardiff University before qualifying as a chartered surveyor. Shortly afterwards, he established an architectural practice in Cardiff city. In his capacity as a surveyor, he secured a consultancy role for Cardiff City Council and then formed Greenfield Road Building Company, which built numerous housing and commercial developments in Cardiff.During that time Hugh purchased from his parents a country inn known as The Greendown, in St George super Ely, just outside Cardiff, which he ran together with a discotheque and restaurant for some years, alongside his building company and architectural practice. He won an award for the inn with the warmest welcome in Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Harpers and Queen magazine voted his restaurant number one in the country. He had the honour of welcoming the then Prince Charles as a guest one evening. At this time Hugh also learned to fly and enjoyed many trips to Guernsey, a lovely way to keep up his flying hours and which resulted in he and his wife Lynn moving to the Island in 1979 with a view to an early retirement. However, it was not long before Hugh became engaged in post retirement projects such as a seaside restaurant and eventually a role as a swimming and tennis teacher at Beau Sejour leisure centre.Hugh loved sport and took up squash for the first time at the age of 46 when he moved to Guernsey. It was not long before he was challenging up the leagues at King’s club. A notable occasion was when he played for Guernsey in Jersey in the match Hugh Lloyd-Jones of Guernsey versus Hugh Jones of Jersey, a man half his age, but Hugh secured the victory.Having suffered a very nasty autoimmune disease in 2000/2001, Hugh found that he needed to spend his days in a warmer climate and he and Lynn ended up moving to Cyprus, where Hugh had designed a home in the village of Peyia, with wonderful views of the sea and mountains. In his last years Hugh suffered from serious health issues. However, as Dylan Thomas said, Hugh did not go gentle into that good night and he refused to surrender to these afflictions without a battle. Otherwise he was mostly happy and contented, spending his last years at home in the knowledge that he was loved by all those around him. He passed away at the age of ninety.Lynn Lloyd-Jones
