Martin Nicholson Former teacher 1967-1991

Mr Heald writes from the 1991 magazine

Martin Nicholson came to HCS, as Head of the
Mathematics' Department, in 1967. What that meant
for those who were here at the time and who thereforehad to face a new regime, I do not know. What is certain is that Martin did not take long to settle in; trueHerefordian generosity made his welcome a foregone
conclusion. He, unmarried then as now, immediately entered
into everything which the School and City had to offer
and which appealed to him. For some years he was an
enthusiastic violin and viola player, joining groups in
HCS, and outside as well; he sang in the Choral
Society and in School choirs; he eagerly took part in
many other kinds of activities, even though he
sometimes admitted that he had never tried them
before. He was responsible for much highly successful
canoeing on the Wye, and above all, perhaps, he was
instrumental in organising trips abroad, including the
very popular annual ski parties, and for taking groups
of Herefordians further afield: Europe, North America
- nowhere was safe! The success of all these can be
traced very easily to Martin's infectious enthusiasms;
indeed, if there is one word which, for me, sums up his
attitude to life, it is that word "enthusiasm". There has
surely never been a person more determined than he to
extract everything possible from any venture, great or
small. A small point; he must, I believe, have an iron
constitution, as he seems to make it a rule that "when
in Rome . . ."; where others shy away from sampling
local cuisine, Martin invariably returns from his
wanderings with tale of trying the most extraordinary
dishes, relishing then all, and surviving when lesser
mortals would have tummy troubles for weeks
afterwards! I am sure that there is a lesson to be learnt
from this: follow Martin Nicholson's attitude and
benefit greatly in experience of differing cultures.
Of his work in the classroom, there are many who
are in a far better position that I to comment. If 'O'
and 'A' level results are, however, a good guide, then
his ability in this important sphere was highly
successful - not an easy act to follow.
Martin Nicholson is one of this world's real
characters of whom there are too few. We wish him
every success and great happiness in Zimbabwe.
During the 24 or so years at HCS he twice had
sabbatical years in Australia; now he goes to Africa
where he will undoubtedly add to his list of friends
world wide, and where his talents as an excellent
photographer will help him enormously to make his
reports on life there even more lively than previous
reports - if that is possible. He is a natural raconteur,
and we shall look forward eagerly to his return to
England so that we can once against listen to his
stories of travels abroad. Meanwhile, what Hereford
loses, Harare gains; lucky Harare!
