From Hereford Times 15/08/2024
Cricket in Herefordshire has lost one of its greatest enthusiasts and most devoted servants with the passing of Terry Mason at the age of 75.
Terry was educated at Hereford Cathedral School and worked in the legal profession but his enduring passion was cricket, a sport in which he was involved from his schooldays to the end of his life.
Terry, known sometimes early in his cricket career by his first given name of Francis, and later ‘F T’, to differentiate him in the scorebook from his brother and long-time team-mate Tim, was an opening bowler and lower order batsman.
He began his career in the early 1960s at Hunderton Youth Club where he ran the team.
He then played for Wayfarers before moving on to Woolhope, who were for a while Woolhope Wayfarers.
In 1980, he returned to ‘home ground’ with Herefordians, originally the old boys team of his former school.
Terry, a formidable administrator and organiser, galvanised a struggling club and set them up with a new headquarters at the Grafton where they played for several seasons before setting up a new base at Bishop’s School.
He remained a source of great knowledge about the game locally until the end of his life.
Terry Mason leaves a widow, Carol, and a son, Ben who was instilled from an early age with his dad’s enthusiasm for cricket.
